FESTIVAL DE JEREZ
The Flamenco Festival
March 2011 (exact dates to be confirmed)

Andalucia is a fantastic year-round destination with a sunny climate, beautiful historic cities, a wonderful coastline, and a whole calendar of lively fiestas - including the feisty world-famous Flamenco Festival or Festival de Jerez.

Each year, towards the end of February and early March, the city comes alive with music and colour.

Top flamenco dancers and guitarists arrive to join in one of the world's most important celebrations of the tradition. While most people regard flamenco as being part of the wider Spanish culture, it is in fact only native to the Andalucian region, and Jerez itself is said to be its birthplace.

There are lots of ticketed shows featuring Spain's leading flamenco artists, alongside impromptu dance performances in the streets and smaller venues across the compact city, giving the whole of Jerez a lively, exciting atmosphere.

Jerez is also famously the home of sherry – which adds to the celebratory atmosphere! While you're there, explore the winding streets of the old town and you can sniff out the old sherry bodegas, where you can learn about the sherry-making process and enjoy some tasting. Outside of the city, if you head up the rolling vineyard-covered hills, you'll reach the region's famous Pueblos Blancos – pretty, white hilltop towns where you can enjoy the views and some tasty local tapas.
