There are 18 books in the series, following the adventures of Orlando and his family, with exquisite illustrations and humorous stories. Orlando's adventures were broadcast on BBC Radio's "Children's Hour" and an Orlando ballet was staged at the Festival of Britain in 1951. The final Orlando book was published in 1972 and Kathleen Hale was awarded an OBE in 1976.
