Although only a small town, Ambleside punches well above its weight in terms of visitor numbers. This is largely thanks to its wonderful position at the head of Lake Windermere in the beautiful Lake District. From here you can catch the lake ferry to Bowness, Lakeside Pier, Wray Castle and Newby Bridge, or hire your own rowing or motor boat. And you don’t have to get on the water to appreciate the views either, as it’s only a short walk from town to the impressive waterfall Stock Ghyll Force and there are heaps of other stunning walks to enjoy.
