Whether you’re looking for a group holiday, that perfect wedding venue, a place to dine or to celebrate a birthday or private function, Appleby Castle is the perfect venue. Experience living history in this luxury castle, a jewel in the North of England.
At Appleby Castle every effort is made to make guests feel comfortable. Relax in the Great Hall by the open fire, play snooker or darts, enjoy a spot of private fishing or explore the Norman Keep. Dine by candlelight in the 15th century dining room - our food is exquisite and selection of wines superb. We are also able to cater for large groups of up to 100 people in the castle or if necessary utilise a marquee in the Inner Bailey - an impressive venue for a celebration or wedding.
Baron's Wing, the oldest part of the Castle, has a wonderful Medieval dining area with a bar, a magnificent kitchen and spacious lounge. The 3 self catering cottages on the estate have open plan living areas and comfortable bedrooms.
Dating from Roman times, this spectacular motte and bailey castle was owned by several Kings of England and Scotland, and cherishes one of few remaining intact Norman Keeps. The deep ditches of the first earthwork, dug in around 1095, still remain. A portcullis and a stone Great Hall dating from 1180 may still be seen, as may a Round Tower built in around 1250.
Appleby Castle is located at the edge of the Lake District at the foot of the Pennines, by the meandering river Eden. Set in 25 acres of private land, with dramatic architecture and stunning views, the Castle is a great base from which to explore the North of England, with Hadrian’s Wall 20 miles away, the Lake District 15 miles away, Durham Cathedral an hours drive and the Yorkshire Dales 40 minutes drive away. Appleby Castle is ideally placed with the M6 corridor 12 miles away and the A1 (Scotch Corner) 28 miles away.
