From here you can climb the Old Man, walk along the Cumbrian way, visit John Ruskin's house or museum, take a steam boat journey on the lake or just chill out in one of the five very attractive local pubs.
Coniston stands close to Coniston lake, which has been preserved and protected by the National Trust which owns large tracts of land in the area and is largely unspoilt by modern developments. Coniston also lies at the foot of an imposing horseshoe ridge formed by the mountains of Wetherlam, Swirl How and the Old Man. This forms an entrance gate to a huge area of Lake District Fells, with Scafell Pike (the highest mountain in England) and the famous Langdale Pikes forming the next ridge. As a centre for walking or mountain biking it can't be beaten. Five different mountain bike routes start in Coniston together with uncountable walks.
The Beech Tree is a fantastic base for groups of nature lovers and sports enthusiasts that can really appreciate the house and the area.
