Caynham Court is a grand building but it has a relaxed atmosphere and feels very much like a family home. Available for exclusive use by groups of up to twenty people. Self-catering or fully-catered options.

We have nine large double bedrooms and a single bedroom, all with modern en-suite shower rooms, a boot room, a walk-in gun room (for shooting parties), laundry room, kitchen, dining room, huge reception room and sitting room, it is ideal for parties throughout the year, with lots of inside and outside space.

Caynham Court, located just 2 miles from Ludlow town centre, was listed in the Domesday Book in 1086. It has been re-modelled many times since but has sat at the heart of Shropshire society for 900 years. The building today is predominantly Georgian brick, following a re-modelling in the 1790s, but it overlays a much older stone structure.

Accommodation is informal. The house is big, with large rooms and modern en-suite facilities attached to all bedrooms, but it is not fussy. Downstairs, the wooden floors and rugs are dog and welly-boot friendly. Efficiently warmed by oil-fired central heating and large wood burners, guests can join the party in the main reception room, retire to read a book, or take a walk over the trout stream and into the old parkland.

Dining is around a huge table, under a lovely old plasterwork ceiling dating from the 1790s.

For catering, we recommend local chefs Harry Bullock or Andy Thomas, who use Shropshire ingredients wherever possible and bring local waiting staff. Your hosts, Diggory and Claire, are on site as caretakers but will leave you alone unless needed.

Your party has exclusive use of the house and facilities while resident. We expect you to treat the place as if you lived here. No fuss, no pretence, just proper, informal, country living.

The property is popular with families for reunions and parties, birthdays and dinners and relaxing weekends together.

If you are planning to turn the volume up to eleven and jump up and down raving until four o' clock in the morning, please look elsewhere.


A huge former library. Now a kitchen with all mod cons. There is a separate laundry room with washers and driers.

Clean, white linen on beds and towels in en-suites, all professionally laundered.
Every bedroom has an en-suite (powerful showers, modern fittings, marble tiles, re-fitted in 2018). There are additional lavatories downstairs (2).

Garden is about 1 acre, mostly lawn. There are garden seats, BBQ, tables and benches. Also a 4 acre field and trout stream, with parkland walks.
There is no pool.
Ample private parking at front and rear of the property. CCTV covered.

Pets welcome but they stay downstairs please, during the day. No male dogs (they pee on the sofas).


2 miles from Ludlow town centre, Caynham Court is on the lower side of Caynham village. Caynham Camp is a 10 minute stroll and the lawns lead into ancient parkland walks in front of the house.
The historic market town of Ludlow is a 5 minute drive. Hereford is 40 minutes south, Shrewsbury 40 minutes north.
Co-op 1.5 miles. Sainsbury's 2 miles. A large Tesco in Ludlow, also Aldi and Majestic (booze), plenty of independent shops and Ludlow's historic market. Ludlow Farm Shop 3 miles.
The Squirrel, 1.5 miles. Ludlow has good pubs & restaurants. We recommend the Dog Hangs Well (parlor pub), The Queens (pub & restaurant), The Angel (wine-bar & restaurant). Mortimer's (fine dining).

Self-catering parties welcome. Catering, if requested, at a standard to fit any budget. Ten bedrooms: all en-suite. Check in after 14.00 check out by 12.00. Maximum number of guests 20. Parking free for ten cars. Dog and child friendly.
