Follow the quiet private lane in the other direction, and in around five minutes you'll be among Wareham's independent shops, bakeries and pubs. It's an unusual combination, and only one reason this much-loved family house is so appealing. Built in the 1960s, Little Westport is a distinctive wooden Colt House with four double bedrooms, two bathrooms, and all accommodation on the ground floor. It has retained the best of its original character, including retro bathroom tiles, while offering the practical comforts a family needs for a Dorset holiday. The large south-facing living room makes the most of the riverside outlook, with French doors opening onto a sunny veranda and expansive garden. The dining area and wood-burning stove (logs supplied) are perfect for evenings when the weather keeps everyone indoors. Two bedrooms have king-size beds, and two have doubles, making the layout particularly appealing to couples travelling together or extended families. The property includes a separate kitchen, a bathroom and a shower room, plus books, games and children's equipment. The extensive garden gives everyone room to spread out, though children need supervision near the river and on the garden's uneven steps. Access to the water through the garden gate is not permitted. Wareham is worth exploring in its own right. Walk its Saxon walls, browse the Saturday market, visit the independent cinema or stop at the quay for lunch. Canoe and kayak hire is available locally, and the surrounding Purbeck countryside is excellent for walking and cycling. Corfe Castle, the Tank Museum and Studland's sandy beaches are all within an easy drive, as are National Trust Corfe Castle, Kingstone Lacey, and Durdle Door.
