Picturesque views, a secluded location and a distinctive building full of character; the Old Corn Mill at Crosthwaite is the perfect Lake District catered retreat. Families and friends feel at home, for short breaks, or special occasions. The large communal areas make it easy for big groups to eat, drink, chat and relax together.

The converted 18th Century Mill, set within extensive private grounds, still retains many of the original period features, including a working water wheel, whilst offering unrivalled flexibility in accommodation.

With 12 rooms in the Mill plus 6 rooms in the adjoining cottage and 3 in the house, Old Corn Mill can be configured for the accommodation and dining of up to 42 people. Alternatively, either of the two properties can be rented separately. All rooms are decorated to a high standard, offering spectacular views of the Lyth Valley and the mill's surrounding grounds.

Spa and treatment days can be booked, for that ultimate tranquil lakes experience. Local pubs with great food, wine and craft beer are within easy walking distance.

The Mill also provides the perfect location for activity holidays, exploring the surrounding lakes on foot, on four wheels or two. Choose the Mill as your base camp, from where we can arrange the best outdoor activities the Lake District can offer, including:
- Water sports (rowing, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding)
- 4x4 driving 
- Clay pigeon shooting
- Fell walking (guided)
- Ghyll Scrambling 
- Archery
- Mountain Biking
- Bushcraft

Dog Friendly

Pets may be considered, charges apply - £20 per pet.


There are no dedicated disabled facilities but we can provide ground floor bedrooms and bathrooms. The access is external.


WiFi is available throughout the mill and mobile phone reception is available on most networks.


We have a commercial grade kitchen at your disposal along with tea and coffee making facilities in the communal areas.

Dining Room

The main dining room can be set out to suit your requirements and can seat 42 people at a maximum.

Sitting Room

The main sitting room is full of interesting and quirky features left over from the mill's past, with the workings of the mill still visible.

TV and Music Facilities

There is a modern TV in the Mill Stone Room that is used as a lounge area with modern comfy seating. Some board games also available.

Games Room

There is no dedicated games room but there is a range of games and jigsaws made available to guests in the main sitting room and a snooker table.

Heating and Open Fires

There is central heating throughout the site.


All rooms have double beds and are decorated to high standard. 17 rooms have en suite facilities and 4 share two bathrooms.


All linen and towels are included in the rates.


All but 4 rooms have en suites and those that don't share one bathroom between 2 bedrooms.

Children's Facilities

Travel cots, high chairs and stair gates can be available if required. Please request when booking your stay.


The Mill has extensive grounds which include a stream and a pond. Outdoor seating and bbq for guest use.

Swimming Pool

There is no swimming pool on site but there is spa hotel located 5 minutes away.


Parking is located at the front of the property and has room for 10 vehicles, and a further 20 can be parked across the road.


Smoking is only permitted outside the buildings.

Located just outside the pretty village of Crosthwaite in the Lyth Valley. Ten minutes from Windermere and only 15 minutes from the M6 motorway.

  • Windermere is only a 10 minute drive away and has a host of amenities and activities to enjoy as well as some great shopping and eating establishments.
  • There is a village shop in Bowland Bridge which is around a mile away, or there is a Booths supermarket in Windermere a ten minute drive away.
  • The Punchbowl in Crossthwaite Village is a 5 minute walk down the lane, and offers a wide range of local ales and a fantastic menu for all to enjoy.
  • Manchester is the nearest international airport and can be reached in around 2 hours by car or train.
  • Oxenholme is the closest train station and is well serviced as it is on the West Coast main line from London to Glasgow. It is around 15 minutes from the Mill and around a 2 hour journey from London.
  • There are bus stops on the A5074 which is the main road at the end of the lane. These will get you to Windermere and Kendal.
