Formerly the local primary school, The Old School House from the outside in the main remains true to its initial calling, with the interior being modified to provide flexible communal space and dormitories. It is truly unique in that it is the only accommodation of its type in East Lothian and provides an excellent base for engaging with East Lothian's many year-round festivals and sporting events. The Old School House also welcomes youth and community organisations, and groups attending weddings at local venues.

Available with sole use, The Old School House is perfect for a gathering of large groups of friends or family on a budget and wanting no-frills, self-catered accommodation where quality time together is the main criteria. The kitchen can easily facilitate the production of home-cooked meals or, for convenience, the freezer can be stocked up. The dining room ensures that whatever you sit down to eat, you do so together. The large communal room allows for everyone to gather, relax and socialise.

The nearest town of Dunbar has a large supermarket plus dining and leisure opportunities, and also a rail station which makes for easy transportation and pick-up.

The bunkhouse is especially suited for those who wish to engage in the great outdoors. There is a drying room for wet gear and a lockable garage for secure storage of bikes and other outdoor equipment. With 22 golf courses, there is much choice for golfers of all standards whilst stunning views are a given. East Lothian is not called The Golf Coast for nothing!

Close to the Sustrans National Route 76, cyclists can easily engage with part of the 168 miles route. Alternatively there is a 39 mile Go East Lothian Trail, perfect for families either on mini adventures or day trips. Just 5 miles down the road at Dunbar water sports are available, either at the wonderful Belhaven Bay or at Fox Lake where disc-golf is also an option.

Other outdoor activities include horse-riding and rock climbing. If hiking is what you are seeking, along with miles of coastline or the Lammermuir Hills, East Lothian is home to a section of the John Muir Way which runs from Dunbar to Helensburgh on the west coast.


The kitchen is well-equipped with fridge, separate freezer, dishwasher and wall mounted water boiler. There is a serving hatch to the dining room.
This is a spacious, sunny room that sits 36 plus. The tables can be folded down and tucked out of the way should the room be needed for another use.
This is a basic but large communal area, comfortably furnished with low seats and occasional tables.
There is neither TV in the hostel nor is there WIFI. It is a complete getaway!
There is a payphone on the premises. Mobile reception is good.
The lounge or dining room can easily substitute as a games room. Remember to bring your own games.
Heating is by way of wall-mounted electrical night storage units.
There are 6 dorms with bunks: 2 8-bed dorms, 2 6-bed dorms (1 en suite), 1 4-bed and 1 with a double bunk. 1 twin room (en suite) too.
Linen and towels are not provided.
There are 2 separate shower rooms with toilets, 1 on the ground floor, 1 on the first floor.
There is an entrance ramp at the front of the building and a lift provides access from the communal area to a designated shower-room.
No additional equipment is provided to meet the needs of babies/infants or very young children so please bring your own.
There are private gardens front and back of the hostel. These are laid to grass with some flower beds and fruit trees.
There is no pool.
Private, off-street parking at the rear of the building for 4 cars with additional parking lot for another 4. On-street parking at the front.
Smoking is not allowed in the building.
There is a no pet policy.


In the hamlet of Innerwick, situated in a hollow behind the church. 10 minute drive from Dunbar, an hour from Edinburgh or Berwick-upon-Tweed. Near the coast. Near great cycling and hiking routes.
Dunbar is the nearest town with a supermarket, swimming pool, restaurants and cafes. It is about a 10 minute drive from Innerwick. A bus service runs from outside the bunkhouse to Dunbar.
The nearest shop is Asda, a 4 mile distance taking 7 minutes from the bunkhouse. Other shops are available in Dunbar, a 10 minute drive from Old School House.
A 7 minute drive will take you to the Pine Marten pub and restaurant and a McDonalds. More pubs and eateries are in Dunbar which is a 10 minute drive from the bunkhouse.

Dunbar Railway Station is the nearest. It is a 10 minute drive and is just under 5 miles away. Dunbar serves the East Coast with a regular service to Edinburgh.
There are 2 bus services to Innerwick. The 130 goes from Dunbar and the 253 goes from Berwick-upon-Tweed. There is a bus stop in front of the bunkhouse on Barns Ness Terrace.
Edinburgh Airport is around 40 miles away and is approximately an hour's drive.
