Stunning Italian village near l'Aquila sleeping 42 for celebrations, weddings, corporate events and large group olidays
Holiday Rental for Groups of Families and Friends. Santo Michele, Abruzzo, Italy, sleeps 2 - 42 in 23 bedrooms.
Guests to Santo Michele will immerse themselves in a traditional fortified medieval Abruzzo mountain village inside the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. It's a place like no other, with unspoilt architecture and a spectacular backdrop. When its original inhabitants deserted Santo Michele to search for work, the village was left abandoned until this wonderful conservation project began. Original architecture materials, local furniture and textiles have been chosen to preserve its legacy, while cleverly hiding the presence of modern technology. The village is an intriguing choice for a family and friends holiday or celebration, offering plenty of comfortable accommodation and communal areas. It's also great for a wedding, a Yoga retreat, a corporate break or a product launch, with fantastic spaces and facilities.
The approach to Santo Michele is mesmerising. Be wowed by the impressive towers and turrets from afar and the hidden archways and winding cobbled streets once you arrive. The village has the Locanda sotto gli Archi Restaurant situated between 2 stone ceiling arches and with a welcoming open fire. Furniture and decor is minimalistic and all the locally sourced food offerings are based on what would have been available and eaten in medieval times. Tisaneria is a special little tearoom for herbal and health producing teas right next to the Bottega domestic craft shop where you can purchase hand made woven cloth and products. The Cantinone is a lovely place underground, where everyone can meet, a cellar for wine tasting and relaxing in front of the fireplace. Outside there are so many pretty corners and balconies to choose from, often under shade to shelter from the blazing Italian sun.
The bedrooms are all individual and fascinating, ranging from standard rooms to an executive 2 bedroomed suite. The history has been preserved with the use of local materials including wool mattresses and wrought iron beds and artefacts from museums. Camera sul Campanile room has an old library with books about the history of Abruzzo. La Blu has an exquisite hand painted ceiling and Il Pagliaio is a suite with its own kitchenette and fireplace. Bathroom facilities are plentiful with modern freestanding baths and basins.
The surrounding countryside in Gran Sasso National Park is an opportunity for hiking and mountain biking excursions. Or in season take to the mountains for skiing and the woods for truffle hunting. For the not so energetic, in house therapeutic treatments and massage are on offer. Pescara and the coast is just over an hour away and L'Aquila a short drive for a wander and a look at its many castles and fortresses. Chieti is within easy reach, known for vineyards and artisan wines.
