Whitchester operates as a non-denominational Christian retreat and is also available to family groups looking to come together in a large country house in the Scottish Borders, or for business groups or other organisations looking for a comfortable venue for an informal residential event. Sorry - no stag or hen parties.

Respectful guests are welcome to come and enjoy the peace and tranquility of Teviotdale. Whitchester is ideally situated to explore the rich history of the Scottish Borders' castles and abbeys, excellent for walking and cycling or just soaking up the quiet atmosphere. Hawick is nearby for exploring and eateries.

Whitchester is a traditional stone-built house over two floors. The large reception area has an elegant quarter turn staircase to the first floor. For socialising with your group, there's a large lounge with an open fireplace extending out to a modern conservatory. The dining room is versatile and can seat up to 22 people in different configurations. A snug is in the heart of the main house and creates an alternative sitting room. The kitchen is a fully functioning commercial kitchen with a separate wash-up area with dishwashers. There is WiFi throughout the house.

An annex with 2 bedrooms is suitable for persons with disabilities (wheelchair accessible) with en suite wet rooms. There is also an art room and kitchen in the annex to enable it to be self sufficient.

A lift to the first floor gives accessibility for those who might struggle with stairs, and there are two downstairs loos. The first floor consists of the main bedroom suite (Buccleuch) with a small kitchen, a featured room and 3 standard double or twin rooms. The second floor consists of 2 featured rooms, a standard double room and 2 single rooms. All the bedrooms have en suite bathrooms, and most can be configured as either twins or a double. The beds and mattresses are all hotel standard.

The grounds include a large lawn area, ideal for a game of croquet, a wooded area and a walled garden. Outside seating is provided to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the gardens.

There is a chapel for services.

Facilities

Fully equipped commercial kitchen with electric ovens, a double gas hob, 2 microwaves and fridge. Wash-up area and separate pantry with freezer.
Versatile, can seat up to 22 people. A doorway to the kitchen provides easy access for service. Situated at the front of the house with garden view.
Spacious room overlooking the gardens with very comfortable seating and open fire. The sitting room extends into new conservatory. There's a snug too.
TV and DVD player in the sitting room, in the main bedroom suite and in one featured bedroom.
Poor mobile signal but can piggy back off the WiFi.
There is no games room, but a well equipped room for arts & crafts. The conservatory has a variety of games and jigsaws.
The house is centrally heated, and the sitting room has an open log fire.
One suite bedroom, 3 featured bedrooms and 8 standard bedrooms. 10 twin or doubles, 2 singles. All but one of the twin/double are zip-and-link beds.
Linen and towels provided.
All bedrooms have en suite bathrooms. Suite and 2 featured rooms have baths and the annex bedrooms have wet rooms. All other en suite have showers.
Annex has wheelchair access and disabled facilities with French doors leading to gardens and en suites with wetrooms. The annex has orthopedic beds.
No specific facilities.
Spacious gardens which include a lawn for croquet, a wooded area and a walled garden with a barbecue and outside seating.
There is no pool.
Parking areas on either side of the house.
The house is a no smoking zone.
Whitchester is dog friendly.

Location

2 miles south of Hawick on B711 road to Roberton, off the A7 road to Carlisle. Accessible by public transport, a request stop Martin's bridge on the A7 half a mile away from the property.
Hawick is 2 miles away, lovely walking distance through Wilton Park following the Teviot river.
There are 4 supermarkets situated in Hawick between 2 - 3 miles away.
There are a range of eateries and pubs in Hawick.

Booking Information

A deposit of 20% on booking, with the balance to be paid on arrival day.
Check in 4pm on arrival day; check out by 11am on departure day. Minimum stay of 3 weekdays or 2 weekend days. Preferred changeover day for week long stays Friday.

We are half a mile away from a request stop on the X95 Edinburgh - Carlisle route.
The nearest airports are Edinburgh and Newcastle both approximately 1.5 hours away by car.
