Koh Samui is a tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand, part of Surat Thani Province, known for its laid-back atmosphere, palm-fringed beaches, and forested interior. While it has long attracted visitors for its resorts and beach clubs, it also offers a quieter side with fishing villages like Bophut and temples like Wat Plai Laem. The island is well-developed but still keeps pockets of traditional life, with bustling night markets and coconut farms still active across the hills.
Koh Samui works especially well for extended families, wedding parties, and mixed-age friend groups looking for a single destination that doesn’t require much internal travel. It also suits multiple families travelling together, thanks to the variety of large villas with shared pools and kitchens. Corporate retreat groups and wellness retreats often choose it because of the availability of full-staffed properties and private event spaces.
Groups stay here for the beaches—Choeng Mon is quieter, while Chaweng has bars, jet ski rentals, and nightlife. Inland, Na Muang Waterfalls are accessible for all ages and make a good daytime outing. Day trips to Ang Thong Marine Park for kayaking or snorkelling tours start from Nathon Pier. Local operators in Lamai and Bophut cater to large groups for boat charters and cooking classes. If the group includes early risers, sunrise from Big Buddha is worth the early start.
