Lagos sits on the western edge of Portugal’s Algarve coast, a town with deep maritime roots and a relaxed but lively atmosphere. Its cobbled streets lead to golden beaches like Praia Dona Ana and Meia Praia, and its past as a hub of Portuguese exploration is still visible in 16th-century buildings and forts along the shoreline. The surrounding Algarve region is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs and sea caves, especially the iconic Benagil cave reachable by boat or kayak.

This area is well-suited to large family groups, multiple couples traveling together, or friends planning a reunion. The variety of beaches, walkable town centre, and abundance of restaurants make it manageable for mixed-age groups. Youth groups and stag or hen parties often base themselves here too, drawn by the concentration of bars and beach clubs. Large group villas and converted townhouses are common, many with private pools and outdoor space.

Lagos offers long, swimmable beaches with calm waters and rocky coves. There’s a stretch of nightlife concentrated around Rua 25 de Abril, where bars stay open late but the tone stays more sociable than rowdy. Ponta da Piedade, just outside town, is one of the most photographed spots in the Algarve, with sheer cliffs and ocean-carved arches. Group boat trips for dolphin watching, sea kayaking, and sunset sailing are easy to arrange from the marina. There’s a fish market by the water, daily excursions to nearby towns like Sagres, and plenty of casual seafood spots for relaxed dinners after the beach.
