Rookhow is situated in the heart of the Lake District in the quiet Rusland Valley, South Lakes, near Grizedale Forest. Perfect group accommodation for family and friends gatherings, activity holidays, yoga retreats or celebrations.

Stay in the cosy bunkbarn with wood burner and enjoy sole use of the 12 acres of private woodland. Toast marshmallows on the campfire, stay in the heated yurt and wake up to the sound of owls and smell of wood smoke. Outdoor seating area with big tables, benches and sun canopy.

Extra group space for activities or additional sleeping in the historic 300 year old Grade II* listed Quaker Meeting House (large meeting room, smaller meeting room and kitchen, toilets).

Space to camp at the back of the bunkbarn. Maximum 30 staying on site.

Nestled between Lakes Windermere and Coniston, near Grizedale with its mountain biking and sculpture trails. Easy access to the Lakes and away from the busiest roads!

Rookhow is also used for Forest Schools courses, yoga and wellness retreats, community events and training.

We put at least 5% of our bookings income into subsidising stays for community groups and in the last year have supported over 500 people from 40 community groups to stay at Rookhow including refugees; drug, alcohol and trauma recovery; LGBTQ+ youth groups and women dealing with domestic abuse. By staying at Rookhow you will help to support these groups.

Rookhow is a registered Quaker charity and is supported by a dedicated team of volunteers who help to run the organisation and maintain its buildings and woodland.

Accessibility

The Quaker Meeting House is wheelchair accessible with a fully accessible toilet and ambulant shower. Bunkbarn not accessible.

Many groups are pleased that mobile reception is very limited. WiFi in the Quaker Meeting House.

Kitchen

2 electric double oven cookers, fridge, freezer, microwave, toaster, 2 kettles. Cooking/dining equipt for 30+. Unlimited hot water.

Dining Room

Open plan - tables seating 16 adjoining the kitchen area; extras can eat in the adjacent sitting area, all heated by wood burner, underfloor heating.

Sitting Room

Easy chairs, sofas and tables in the spacious open beamed former barn area with wood burner. Windows opening onto Quakers Wood and front courtyard.

TV and Music Facilities

We purposefully don't provide a TV. Lots of board games and books provided. Bring your own musical instruments.

Heating and Open Fires

Wood burner in sitting room. Logs provided. Underfloor heating downstairs. Radiators upstairs. Powered by air source heat pump.

Bedrooms

Downstairs: Sleeping 8 (4 bunks). Upstairs: Sleeping 6 (2 bunks, 2 singles) & stairs to upper 'snug' room (2 single beds).

Linen

Pillows, pillow cases, undersheets provided - bring own sleeping bags or duvets.

Bathrooms

2 showers. 3 WCs. 4 wash-hand basins. Bring own towels. Hand soap provided.

Children's Facilities

A wonderful private 12 acres of woodland to roam free and explore!

Outdoor

12 acres of woods, full of wildlife, with paths and fire pits. Yurt for hire. Outdoor tables and benches beside the Bunkbarn with sun canopy.

Swimming Pool

Wild swimming at nearby High Dam which is a favourite Lake District wild swimming spot.

Parking

Car park for 12 cars. Other parking nearby along roadside.

Smoking

No smoking or vaping in buildings. Smoking allowed in car park, away from woodland. Please pick up cigarette ends!

Booking Information

Minimum stay 2 nights. Week long bookings: 7 nights for the price of 6. Mid week: 4 nights for the price of 3.

Payment: £100 deposit within a week to reserve the date. Balance to be paid at least 6 weeks before. £150 refundable damages deposit.

Check in usually 4/5pm. Checkout 10am or 12noon at weekends. If we can arrange an early check-in/ check-out we will.

Location

The Rusland Valley is a quiet corner of the Lakes District. Only 30 minutes from the M6, nestled between the Coniston and Windermere, the valley is a secluded idyll relatively unmarked by tourism. 

You can easily spend the weekend just walking or cycling from Rookhow without having to get back in the car to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Directions: 

By train & bike: 9 miles from Ulverston train station, 9 miles from Cark station or 13 miles from Grange-over-Sands.

By car: From M6 Junction 36: Follow A590, signs for Barrow. Leave A590 at Greenodd (A5092) junction and follow sign for Workington for 0.5 mile. Take minor road to right signed Colton / Oxen Park. Continue through Oxen Park. After 2 miles Rookhow is on the left (there’s a quicker way coming off at Newby Bridge but the roads are narrower and windy!).

From Ambleside: to Hawkshead, then to Grizedale. Continue beyond Grizedale for 3.5 miles (Satterthwaite – Ulverston Road). Rookhow is on the right.
