Porth is a small seaside village just two miles north of Newquay town centre on the north Cornwall coast. It has a quieter, more relaxed feel than Newquay itself, sitting in a sheltered valley surrounded by open countryside — but with all the restaurants, attractions and nightlife of the town just a five-minute drive away.

The star of the show is Porth Beach: a long sweep of golden sand sheltered by headlands on both sides, making it one of Newquay’s safest and most family-friendly beaches. At low tide, it opens up into a huge expanse perfect for group games and rock pooling. A footbridge connects the beach to Porth Island (Trevelgue Head), where you’ll find the remains of an Iron Age fort, a dramatic blowhole and spectacular coastal views. The calmer water here is popular with paddleboarders and swimmers, and surfing is restricted in summer, so it’s ideal for groups with mixed ages and abilities.

The Mermaid Inn sits right on the beach — a family- and dog-friendly pub serving local Cornish produce. Newquay’s wider dining scene is minutes away, from harbour-side seafood restaurants to clifftop gastropubs.
For activities, the South West Coast Path runs directly through Porth, linking a string of beaches including Watergate Bay, Lusty Glaze and Fistral. Newquay is England’s surfing capital with schools and board hire everywhere, and there’s coasteering, kayaking and kitesurfing for the more adventurous. Newquay Zoo, Blue Reef Aquarium, the National Trust’s Trerice Manor House and Lappa Valley Steam Railway are all close by.

Getting here is straightforward: Cornwall Airport Newquay is five miles away, Newquay’s railway station is in town, and the A30 connects to the rest of the UK by car.
