The beaches are sandy, long and clean, the closest being at the seaside town of Troon 8 miles away. Highlights in the local area are Dumfries House and Estate (saved for the nation by Charles, Prince of Wales and Great Steward of Scotland), the National Trust for Scotland's Culzean Castle and Country Park overlooking the sea, Robert Burns Birthplace Museum at Alloway and the River Ayr Way, a source to sea path walkable in "bite size" picturesque chunks. The islands of the Firth of Clyde, Arran, Bute and Great Cumbrae, offer opportunity for day trips and adventure.
