The 10 Best Dog Walks in The Lake District

People love visiting the Lake District is because of the thrilling trails and spectacular views you’ll only find in this little slice of England. Because of this, there are so many good dog walks in the Lake District, offering a blend of dramatic scenery, varied terrain, and endless opportunities for exploration.

There’s lots to consider when travelling with your dog, from transport to packing to where to stay. However, once you’re there, you’ll want to keep them occupied.

1. Keswick Dog Walks

Let’s kick things off with a classic: Catbells. The walk is a short, steep climb where you’ll be offered sweeping panoramic views of Derwentwater. The walk and surrounding fells, make it perfect for most dogs and humans alike. There are plenty of spots for a picnic, too.

  • Distance: 3.5 miles (5.6 km) round trip
  • Time: 2 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate

2. Tarn Hows Circular Walk

If you’re after something a bit more serene, Tarn Hows (near Coniston) is the place to be. This circular route around a beautiful tree-lined tarn on idyllic waterside paths is not only scenic but also dog friendly. The well-maintained paths and benches along the route ensure a comfortable walk for your furry friend. Plus, dogs are allowed to swim in the tarn, adding to their enjoyment.

  • Distance: 1.8 miles (2.9 km) round trip
  • Time: 1 hour
  • Difficulty: Easy

3. Grizedale Forest

For the more adventurous, Grizedale Forest (also near Coniston) offers a woodland wonderland with various trails. From short strolls to longer hikes, there’s something to suit everyone. There’s enough varied terrain to keep the walk interesting. The Milwood Trail is one of the most popular, as you and your dog can sniff out the sculpture collection hidden amongst the trees.

  • Starting Point: Grizedale Visitor Centre
  • Distance: Varies from a 1 mile walk to 10 miles (1.6 to 16 km)
  • Time: 30 minutes to 3 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate

4. Buttermere Circuit

If some time in the mountains is your thing, the Buttermere Circuit is a must-do. This relatively flat walk circles the stunning Buttermere Lake. There are no steep inclines or descents. The crystal-clear waters are wonderful and reflect scenic beauty. The views are super Instagrammable!

  • Distance: 4.5 miles (7.2 km) round trip
  • Time: 2 hours
  • Difficulty: Easy

5. Helvellyn

For the more experienced hikers and their fit and adventurous dogs, Helvellyn offers a challenging but incredibly rewarding trek. As one of the Lake District’s highest peaks, the views from the top are nothing short of spectacular. There’s even a thrilling ridge walk along Striding Edge. The real highlight will be the sense of achievement from conquering one of the Lake District’s giants!

  • Distance: 9 miles (14.5 km) round trip via Striding Edge
  • Time: 6 to 7 hours
  • Difficulty: Challenging

6. Rydal and Grasmere

Follow in the footsteps of English poet William Wordsworth – you can even visit Dove Cottage, his home. Also, this delightful walk takes you around Rydal Water and Grasmere. This route combines lakeside paths, woodland trails, and historic sites. It’s ideal for a leisurely stroll. You could stop for a cream tea or in one of the dog friendly pubs.

  • Distance: 3.5 miles (5.6 km) round trip
  • Time: 1.5 hours
  • Difficulty: Easy

7. Ennerdale Water

For those seeking tranquillity, Ennerdale Water offers a peaceful retreat. This remote lake is less frequented by tourists, making it an excellent spot for a serene walk with your dog along lakeshore paths. There are also plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting, adding to the peaceful ambience.

  • Starting Point: Bowness Knott Car Park
  • Distance: 7 miles (11.3 km) round trip
  • Time: 4 hours
  • Difficulty: Easy

8. Dog Walks in Windermere

Another of the dog friendly walks is Wansfell Pike. This is an excellent choice if you’re after a shorter but still rewarding walk. This walk offers fantastic views over Ambleside and Lake Windermere without needing an all-day hike. There is a steady and manageable ascent, perfect for a morning or afternoon hike. Reward yourself afterwards with a visit to one of the dog friendly pubs in Ambleside.

  • Time: 3 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate

9. Elterwater and Skelwith Force

Enjoy a gentle riverside walk that takes you from the charming village of Elterwater to the impressive Skelwith Force waterfall along lovely riverside paths. This walk is perfect for a relaxed day out with your dog along the Cumbria Way, which takes five days if you walk it all. If you want to see more of this impressive route, you could enjoy a secluded escape in the heart of Cumbria.

10. Dodd Wood

Nestled on the slopes of Skiddaw (near Keswick), Dodd Wood offers a fantastic mix of woodland paths, wildlife spotting, and spectacular views over Bassenthwaite Lake. This walk is ideal for those who love a bit of elevation but prefer a less strenuous climb than the higher falls. Make sure to visit the Osprey viewing platforms, especially during nesting season.

  • Time: 2.5 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
